New Rite Aid Coupon Policy

With the increase of extreme couponing, many stores are tightening the reigns on their coupon policies.

Rite Aid is the latest company to make changes to make sure everyone has a chance to get in on the deals. Read the full coupon policy here

The biggest changes on the policy include:

*limits of 4 per person as long as there are enough for other customers
* Only ONE coupon for BOGO items.
* No BOGO coupons on items on sale for BOGO. In the past this would make both items free

Coupon Boot Camp on TV!

Welcome to all the new visitors who saw this blog featured on WAKA!

It was so much fun filming the spot. I just wish my coupons would have arrived in time to show even greater savings!

One thing I wish the story focused on was that I was able to bust two big coupon myths:
1. There are never coupons for meats (the story touched on this a bit)
2. There are never for fresh produce.

Using the coupons I was able to get 2 bags of salad, 2 cucumbers and 2 lbs of strawberries. I also took home with me a peelie coupon off of cereal for more money off fresh produce! I didn't want to use all the produce coupons in one day.

While I didn't take home a lot of produce, I did take home enough for a delicious spinach and strawberry salad.

What you also didn't see in the shop was the lack of large quantities like and the lack of a whole lot of processed foods. My family doesn't eat that way, so I don't shop that way...and I still managed to rack up 86 percent savings before tax!

Did a little weekend shopping

Today I visited WinnDixie to use some coupons that came a bit too late to use on my big trip for the TV cameras yesterday. My totals would have been under $20 yesterday if I had used these coupons and I would have had closer to 90 percent savings. Oh well! I still netted 86 percent savings on that trip, which is nothing to sneeze at!

So, what did I end up with today? For a grand total of $1.98 before tax, and $4.01 out of pocket, not including the $1 OYNO Catalina I got:


I have:
1 gallon of milk
1 coke zero
1 baking cocoa
4 trays cat food (WD store coupon B3 G1 Free, plus 2 BOGO manufacturer Qs)
10 bottles BBQ sauce (used 10 of the $1/1 KC Masterpiece from the inserts 5/15)
16 Mahatma rice (used 16 of the .50/1 coupons from the 5/15 inserts)

The cat food stacking worked out that I bought ONE cat food and got THREE free. Plus, it generated a catalina coupon for $1 off my next purchase.

The BBQ sauce was $1.99 and a BOGO, so those were FREE.

The rice was $1 and a BOGO. I was able to use a .50/1 coupon on each package, and those coupons doubled. The total cost for the rice was $8 without coupons. I had $16 worth of coupons! That gave me $8 in overage I used to purchase the rest of my items!

In the end it was a 96 percent savings!

We're going to be on TV!

Phew! I'm glad that's over :)

WAKA our local CBS affiliate was at my house bright and early this morning for our shop at WinnDixie.

I said straight up that i wasn't using any coupons other than what was available in our local lousy market. No coupons were used from clipping services. My goal was to show what is available HERE I also said I was shooting for 70 percent savings, which is reasonable and what most couponers get.

I did a happy dance for the camera when I opened my box of Frosted Mini Wheats to discover $1 off fruit coupon! I was really hoping for an extra of those :D Oh and there were peelies on the cereal at the store for $1 off fruit. So I got to show there ARE coupons for produce. And I used the $2 off ribs WYB KC masterpiece. So right there BUSTED two big coupon myths.

Next myth to bust: there are only coupons for junk foods. The only junk food I had in my cart were a free 12.6 oz bag of M&Ms, 2 boxes of wheat thins stix and a single serve of skinny cow. Everything else was fresh produce, some cake decorating items, hair coloring, cleaning products, rice, a few sauces, cereal, cheese and eggs!

I had $150 in groceries before coupons and store savings....Any Guesses on how much I spent? Or should I make you all wait until next Wednesday when the story airs ;)

Sometimes it pays to price match

Price Matching. For those unfamiliar with this couponing strategy, it's where you take your ads to another store and request they honor the competitor pricing. One major national chain does this: WalMart.

The advantage of price matching is not having to drive to all the stores (drug and grocery stores) to get the best prices of the week. WalMart has recently made it's coupon policy a lot more friendly. They do take internet coupons. They do price match competitor coupons WITH a specific price listed. While they won't honor the BOGO deals or deals for rewards dollars the drug stores are famous for, they WILL honor a BOGO if it lists a specific price.

Here's how I worked it today: Walgreens has bagged Werther's candies on sale BOGO, with a listed price in the ad of $2.29. I have two coupons for 75 cents off the werther's candies (smart source 3/13). Walgreens doesn't allow "overage" so you can't use a coupon on the free item. That means, my OOP at Walgrees for these candies would be $1.54.

Instead of heading to Wags, I went to Walmart where they will let me use two coupons on those items! They rang up $2.99 a bag. The cashier price match them by ringing the first bag at $2.28 and gave me the second bag for a penny. It's a weird glitch in the system, but they can't "give items for free." Then, the cashier scanned my coupons. I ended up paying .79 cents TOTAL for both bags!

Walgreens also had Cap'n Crunch on sale for $1.75. My Wags only has original. Walmart carries more variety in the size on sale AND I was able to use my 50 cent coupon (red plum 4/17). I paid $1.25 for the cereal! Another option for this deal is to use the $2 off 3 boxes of Quaker cereals from the Pepsico Moments to Save flyer from a couple weeks ago. You'd score 3 boxes of Cap'n Crunch for $3.25 or just $1.08 a box! This coupon expires Saturday, so use it fast!

Whenever you price match, bring the ads with you. The cashiers are supposed to keep the competitor circulars at front with them, but that's not always the case. Bring your own copies just to be safe and to speed up the process.

I've found some cashiers are better than others at price matching and working the coupons. It doesn't hurt to profile your cashiers. I will wait longer in line if Linda (my favorite cashier) is working just because I know she knows what she's doing.

Drug Store Adventures 5/11

Today was the day to do my drugstore shopping. I had a few disappointments because I didn't ask questions before I started.

I thought the nail polish at CVS would count towards my beauty bonus, but it didn't. Very disappointing. So I'm still $11 short on that. I did score on deodorant, tho! They had SpeedStick marked down to 90 cents and I had my .50/1 from the 5/1 SS. Be sure to check out your CVS stores for similar deals!

Walgreens didn't even have the Rolled Gold pretzels in stock so no go on the pretzel/soda/movie catalina deal this week.

I was also mostly hit at Rite Aid. I was fully expecting them to be cleared out of Tylenol Precise. It's FREE this week and counts towards the $10 UP WYB $25 Weekend Warrior deal. That deal has been hit and miss tracking this week. Much to my surprise, my preferred store had some in stock! I grabbed three and got my $10 UP!

I headed to another RA to pick up another 4 creams (my store was out of cream only). That store only had 3, so it would have to do. I picked up a few other things and used my UPs fully expecting to hit the weekend warrior again since the 4 additional precise products would put me over $25 again based on the tracking on the receipt. It was a no go. I hope it prints the next time I go in.

In total I had more than $50 in merchandise and I paid $3.86 oop and that was *all* sales tax!

Here are this week's highlights:

This week there are a couple hot coupons that match up with sales. Tylenol Precise is $5 at Rite Aid and there's a $5 off coupon! There's also a hot coupon for $1 off Stayfree. These are just $1 at a couple stores this week. If your stores are anything like mine, they are already gone. However, WalMart has plenty in stock and will price match. Since these don't match any deals *this week* I recommend either hitting WalMart for the price match OR getting a rain check. The rain check might be your best bet at Rite Aid for the Tyelnol Precise. There is a deal next week that uses the Tylenol Precise towards a $10 UP reward.

Milk is also best price at CVS. It's on sale for $3.19 + $1 ECB, limit two. Buy one gallon of milk on the first transaction for $3.19. Do a second transaction for the second gallon of milk, using the $1 ECB. The second gallon is down to $2.19 and you get another $1 ECB!

Always check your receipts!

Today was an early morning stop at Publix for me. I was swapping some coupons with a friend and she was there at an hour that usually finds me in my PJs eating breakfast. I am just not functional before 9 a.m.

I managed to get through the shopping experience with only a few disappointments: a couple of my coupons had just expired and my total wasn't what I had hoped in terms of savings. I had spent $26 and saved $44.

This week costing a bit more was expected, as I bought I huge bottle of EVOO. It was BOGO, but even with the $1 off coupon, it was still $4.50. It was the most expensive item in my cart.

I scrutinized my receipt and quickly found where I had gone wrong: The hot dogs! I thought I grabbed four packages that were BOGO. With the sale and coupons, the items should have been 65 cents each, which is a GREAT price for hot dogs, not to mention name brand. Instead, I had only grabbed one of the sale hot dogs and THREE packages of hot dogs not on sale. That mistake made up nearly half of my entire grocery bill! I like hot dogs as much as the next person, but I don't like them enough to spend $13 on three packages of hot dogs!

Back in to the store and I was able to get a refund. And, I don't feel bad about it. I had no intention of spending that much money on hot dogs.

After the return, it was $13 and $31 in savings, $20 of that was just in coupons and not store savings! That still equals out to about 70 percent savings! It's not extreme, but it's pretty typical of what the average person can do without buying 40 bottles of mustard.

Price Matchups 5/1

Here are the matchups for this week. Some of the deals are just washes between which stores you go to.

If you need TP, CVS is your best bet this week with the Charmin deal. Even taking in to account the larger package at Target, you will save about 2 cents a roll, not counting the ECB you get.

CVS is also the best place for TIDE this week. the 31-40 load, is 5.99, plus ECB. Per ounce it's cheaper than the deal at Walgreens, Kmart and Target.

Other highlights include FREE colgate from CVS, after ECBs.

I'm going to be adding more as I go. This is taking longer than I expected ;)
